Canine Graduation
a logic riddle

It was a red-letter day when graduation ceremonies were held at the Woodhall Dog Obedience School. Five dogs, each a different breed, graduated with honors and joined the guest speaker on stage for the event. Each of these dogs (no two of them have the same owner) got his or her highest mark for obeying a different command. From the information provided, determine the breed (one is a mastiff) of each dog, that dog's owner, and the command for which each dog received the highest mark.

1. Molly is neither the Samoyed nor the Pomeranian. The dog whose highest mark was in speaking on command (who isn't owned by Ms. Flaxman) is neither the Beagle nor the Samoyed. Ace isn't the Skye Terrier.

2. Neither the dog whose highest mark was for heeling nor the dog whose highest mark was for sitting on command (neither of which is the Skye Terrier) is either the dog owned by Ms. Flaxman of the dog owned by Mr. Larch. Herbert did not receive his highest mark for fetching.

3. Neither Molly nor Cooper excelled at speaking on command. Ms. Thornton is not the owner of the Pomeranian, who is neither Ace nor Cooper. The one who received his or her highest mark for staying on command is not the Pomeranian.

4. Herbert, who did not receive his highest mark for sitting on command, is not owned by either Ms. Thornton (whose dog's highest mark wasn't received for heeling) nor Ms. Flaxman owns the dog who received his or her highest mark for fetching.

5. Neither Ms. Oxley nor Ms. Goodwin is the one who owns Zeke. The dog who received the highest mark for sitting on command (who isn't the Beagle) is owned by neither Ms. Oxley nor Ms. Thornton.
